What this post covers
1. Ontario's free flu shot for 2026-27: who qualifies, when general eligibility opens (October 26) and where to go in Ottawa.
2. What changed in Quebec this fall: the flu shot is no longer free for everyone.
3. A quick comparison and a checklist for your appointment.

The free flu shot in Ontario for 2026-27 opens to the general population on October 26, 2026, and it is free for everyone aged 6 months and older who lives, works or goes to school in Ontario. Quebec has changed course this year, so the rules on each side of the Ottawa River are no longer the same. This guide is an update of my January post and replaces its Quebec information.

Important update: Earlier versions of this post said the flu vaccine was free for everyone in both provinces. That is no longer true for Quebec. Quebec's Health Ministry told CTV News the vaccine is now free only for higher-risk groups. Ontario's program is still free for all ages 6 months and up.

Where Do You Fit?

Flu shot for Ontario residents and for Quebec residents

Healthy adult in Ontario
Free. Book at a participating pharmacy once general eligibility starts on October 26.
Family with a child under 2
Pharmacies cannot vaccinate children under 2. Use your doctor, a Neighbourhood Health and Wellness Hub or an Ottawa Public Health clinic.
Gatineau resident who works in Ottawa
Ontario's page says the free shot is for people who live, work or go to school in Ontario, so you may qualify in Ontario. Ask the pharmacy what proof of work it needs.
Healthy adult living in Quebec
Not free in Quebec this year unless you are in a high-risk group. You can still pay for a shot at a pharmacy.
Senior (65+)
Free in both provinces. Ontario seniors get a high-dose or adjuvanted vaccine.
Newcomer without OHIP
A health card is not required in Ontario. You may need proof of residence, work or school. OPH clinics and hubs can help.

From our family
Our family gets our flu shots at a pharmacy in Stittsville every fall. I book online a few days ahead, and the whole visit takes about 30 minutes, including the 15-minute wait. When we lived in Notre-Dame-de-l'Île-Perrot, Quebec, we went to the CLSC in Vaudreuil-Dorion for our shots.

Quebec: What Changed This Year

Quebec's Health Ministry told CTV News that it returned to pre-pandemic guidelines, so the flu vaccine is no longer free for all Quebecers. The free groups reported by CP24/CTV are:

▸
People 65 and older.
▸
People 6 months and older with chronic diseases (for example diabetes, heart, lung or kidney disease) or a weakened immune system.
▸
Residents of CHSLDs, seniors' homes and other communal settings.
▸
Pregnant women: those with chronic diseases at any stage, and healthy pregnant women at least 13 weeks along.
▸
Health-care workers and people who live with or care for high-risk people (including a child under 6 months or a person 75 or older).

Everyone else can still get vaccinated, but pays at a pharmacy. There is no single provincial price, because pharmacies set their own fees. Ask for the total (vaccine plus administration fee) before you book.

How to book in Quebec
